What Is New for 2027
Something worth knowing before you read any 2027 page anywhere: Chevrolet's 2027 documentation carries no new-item markers at all. Not one. Everything below was found by reading the 2027 specifications against the 2026 ones line by line, and every item is a change we can point at rather than a claim.
| What changed | Detail |
|---|---|
| Both engine codes | The gas V8 code becomes L8S and the Duramax code becomes L6P. No displacement, horsepower or torque is printed for either one. |
| The Allison name | Every transmission row now reads Allison 10-Speed automatic. The 2026 documents carry no such name anywhere. |
| 17-inch wheels and tires | Eliminated. An 18-inch wheel and an LT265/70R18E tire are the new floor on every truck. |
| Adaptive cruise control | Standard on all six trims, including the Work Truck. Conventional cruise control disappears from the option list entirely. |
| Pedestrian braking | Becomes Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking under a new code. A real content change, not a rename. |
| Gross vehicle weight rating menu | Shrinks from thirty codes to eighteen, and the ceiling rises to 12,300 lb. |
| Stars and Steel | The Special Edition, its LT appearance package and its graphics accessory are all deleted. If you want one, it is a 2026 truck or nothing. |
| E85 FlexFuel | Dropped. The 2026 Work Truck could be ordered with it; the 2027 cannot. |
| ZR2 wheel code | Changes, and the etched-logo wording is gone from the description. The rest of the ZR2 carries over intact. |
One more that matters if you are shopping the off-road end: the Trail Boss content has been rewritten and currently carries a note that it is not available to order. We are not going to promote a truck you cannot configure. If that changes, this page changes.
Every 2027 change in detail · The 2026 buyers guide, with the published ratings
Two V8s and an Allison 10-Speed
For 2027 the Silverado 2500 HD is offered with a V8 with direct injection and variable valve timing, gasoline (L8S), or the Duramax turbo-diesel V8, B20-diesel compatible (L6P). Both come with an Allison 10-Speed automatic. Chevrolet prints no output figures for either engine in the 2027 documentation, so this page prints none either.
The axle pairing carries over: the gas engine with one ratio, the Duramax with the other, and no ratio choice on the order sheet. So does the diesel equipment bundle — engine block heater, exhaust brake, high-output alternator, winter grille cover, and the regeneration option restricted to fleet and government orders on the Work Truck and the LT.
If you need a number today, use a 2026 truck
In 2026 the gas 6.6L V8 is rated at 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft, and the 2026 Duramax at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm. Those are 2026 figures for 2026 trucks and they are the ones standing in our yard right now.
Do not carry them onto a 2027 truck. Both engine codes changed, and a code change is exactly the situation where assuming carryover gets somebody an incorrect answer. When Chevrolet publishes 2027 output, this page gets it.
A note for the thorough: the string "6.6L" does appear once in the 2027 material, inside a footnote attached to a weight rating code, in 2026 form. One orphaned footnote is not a published specification, and we are not treating it as one.

The Six Trims for 2027
Work Truck, Custom, LT, ZR2, LTZ and High Country, with the same model codes and the same availability restrictions as 2026. The LT is still 4WD only, the ZR2 is still a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed truck only, and the Custom is still Crew Cab and Double Cab. What moved is the content at each rung.
Work Truck
Gets adaptive cruise control as standard equipment, which is a genuinely useful change on a truck that runs Highway 12 all day. It also loses the E85 option and the 17-inch wheel.
Custom
Picks up the red front recovery hooks and an off-road tire option that were higher up the ladder in 2026. The Custom Blackout appearance option carries over.
LT
Its appearance package now includes the 20-inch wheels and their tires outright rather than as a separate line, which simplifies the order and changes what the package is worth.
LTZ and High Country
Largely carryover. The technology package with the head-up display and the rear camera mirror is still an LTZ and High Country item, and still not offered on a Work Truck, Custom or LT.
Trailer Ratings for 2027: Not Published
There are no 2027 conventional ratings, no 2027 gooseneck ratings, no 2027 gross combination weight ratings, no 2027 payload figures and no 2027 dimensions. The 2027 documentation simply stops before those pages. This is not us being cautious — the tables do not exist.
And you should not carry the 2026 numbers across. Both engine codes changed and the whole weight rating menu was rebuilt, which are exactly the two inputs that decide a trailer rating. Anyone publishing a 2027 Silverado 2500 HD tow rating today is either guessing or repeating 2026 figures with a 2027 headline on them.
If you need a rated truck for a trailer you own now, buy a 2026. Every figure on the 2026 page is published, it is attached to a configuration, and the truck is standing in the yard where you can read its door-jamb label yourself. The 2026 towing section is here.

The One New Number: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The weight rating menu is the only place 2027 publishes a number, and it did move. The menu shrank from thirty codes to eighteen, and the ceiling went up.
| 2027 rating | Which truck | Against 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 12,300 lb | Crew Cab long bed 4WD with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package | Up from 11,900 lb, the new ceiling |
| 12,150 lb | Crew Cab standard bed 4WD with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package | Up from 11,750 lb, the same 400 lb step |
| 12,000 lb and 11,600 lb | Two codes that did not exist in 2026 | New rungs in the middle of the ladder |
| 10,000 lb | The lowered rating, still available and still a deliberate fleet choice | Carryover, but see the Max Trailering section |
What a higher rating does and does not tell you
It tells you the truck and everything in it may legally weigh more. It does not tell you the payload, because payload is that rating minus what the truck actually weighs, and 2027 curb weights are not published. It does not tell you the tow rating either.
So a 400 lb increase is a real and encouraging signal, and it is not a number you can put on a scale yet. Treat it as a reason to be interested in a 2027, not a reason to plan a load around one.
Gross vehicle weight rating explained, and why it went up
The 18-Inch Floor
Seventeen-inch wheels and tires are gone from the 2027 Silverado 2500 HD entirely. The base tire is now an LT265/70R18E, the base wheels are an 18-inch painted silver steel and an 18-inch high gloss black aluminium, the Z71 package brings its own 18-inch wheel, the 20-inch wheel now reaches Double Cabs and comes included with the LT appearance package, and the ZR2 keeps its 35-inch mud-terrains on a new wheel code.
The consequence nobody mentions
The Max Trailering Package has always required 18-inch or 20-inch wheels. In 2026 that ruled out the trucks ordered on 17s. In 2027 every truck clears that prerequisite from the factory, which quietly widens who can order the package.
With one catch: on a Work Truck or an LT, a truck ordered with the Max Trailering Package cannot keep the base tire. If you are speccing a fleet truck, that is a line item to settle at the order stage rather than a surprise at delivery.
The 18-inch floor and what it changes on an order sheet
Max Trailering and the Capability Packages for 2027
The contents are identical to 2026: a 3500 HD frame, 3500 HD leaf springs, a 12-inch rear axle and a 3500 HD shock package. It still requires the gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep package, the Duramax, and 18-inch or 20-inch wheels. It is still unavailable on the ZR2, on Double Cabs, and on a truck ordered with the bed delete.
New exclusion: the lowered rating
For 2027 you cannot combine the Max Trailering Package with the lowered 10,000 lb gross vehicle weight rating on any trim. Fleets that order both for licensing reasons need to pick one.
New exclusion: the base tire
On a Work Truck or an LT, the package cannot be ordered alongside the base 18-inch tire. You move up a tire, which is a cost line worth knowing before the quote.
Power take-off
The 2026 conflict between power take-off and adaptive cruise control is gone, which matters now that adaptive cruise is standard on every trim. A dump-bed or bale-bed truck no longer has to give one up.
Everything else carries over
Gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep, snow plow prep, the Alaskan edition, the bed delete, the trailer tire pressure provision and the trailer brake wiring are all unchanged.
One exclusion disappeared, and it proves nothing
In 2026 the footnotes said plainly that the Max Trailering Package could not be ordered on the 2WD Regular Cab long bed. That sentence is not in the 2027 footnotes. It is tempting to read that as the configuration becoming available with a big rating attached, and we are not going to. There is no 2027 weight rating code pairing that truck with the package, and there are no 2027 trailer ratings at all. A missing footnote is not a specification.
The ZR2 for 2027
Carries over intact, which is the right answer for a truck that was already the only one of its kind. The lifted suspension with Multimatic DSSV dampers, the 35-inch Goodyear Territory mud-terrains with the matching spare, the electronic locking rear differential, the two-speed automatic transfer case, hill descent control, the ZR2 skid plates, the red recovery hooks, the dedicated interior, the seven-speaker Bose, the 13.4-inch screen and the Bison Edition are all still there.
Two things changed and neither is mechanical: the wheel carries a new code, and the etched ZR2 logo wording has been dropped from the wheel description. It is still a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed truck only, and the Max Trailering Package is still not offered on it.

Ordering a 2027 Work Truck
If you run a fleet or a crew, the 2027 changes land differently than they do for a retail buyer. Here they are in one place.
| Change | What it means on an order sheet |
|---|---|
| Adaptive cruise standard on a Work Truck | Content you used to pay up the ladder for, now included on the cheapest truck in the range. On highway miles this is the single most useful 2027 change. |
| The 18-inch floor | No more 17-inch spec-down. Slightly more tire cost per corner, and every truck now clears the Max Trailering wheel prerequisite. |
| Off-road tires and recovery hooks on the Custom | A Custom can now be specced closer to a field truck without stepping up to an LT. |
| Power take-off and adaptive cruise together | The 2026 conflict is resolved. A power take-off truck keeps the standard adaptive cruise. |
| Lowered rating blocks Max Trailering | If you order the 10,000 lb rating for licensing, you give up the package. Decide which one the truck actually needs. |
| E85 is gone | If a fuel contract depends on it, a 2026 Work Truck is the last one that can be ordered with it. |
One piece of timing advice that has nothing to do with the model year: order the winter equipment in September. Snow plow prep, the dual alternator and the Alaskan edition are order-bank items, and a truck that arrives in January without the plow mount is a truck that misses the season it was bought for.

Safety and Tech for 2027
Still no named safety bundle. Chevrolet lists the driver assistance content item by item, and that remains a real difference from how some brands present the same features. The six standard rows carry over with one upgrade: front pedestrian braking becomes front pedestrian and bicyclist braking under a new code.
The headline change is adaptive cruise control going standard on all six trims. In 2026 it was standard only on the High Country and available elsewhere through packages. For 2027 it is on every truck, and conventional cruise control disappears from the option list altogether.
The camera package and the technology package are otherwise unchanged, except that the technology package no longer needs to mention adaptive cruise, because you already have it. Infotainment carries over: the 7-inch display on Work Truck and Custom, the 13.4-inch screen with Google built-in from LT up, the 3.5-inch and 12.3-inch driver clusters, the head-up display through the technology package, and the seven-speaker Bose on the ZR2 and High Country. Satellite radio moves to the newer platform.
Colours and Interiors for 2027
Nine colours, the same nine as 2026, with the same trim restrictions. Nothing was added and nothing was dropped. What did change is that the new-for-2026 flags came off White Sands and Polar White Tricoat, which are now simply part of the palette.
The 2027 angle is different from the 2026 one, and it is useful if you are ordering rather than buying off the lot: the whole palette is settled before the first truck ships, so you can decide today exactly what is legal on the trim you want. White Sands is still barred from the Work Truck and the LT. Polar White Tricoat is a High Country colour and is not offered on the ZR2 or the LTZ. Red Hot is not available on the LTZ or the High Country. Cypress Gray is not offered on the High Country. The ZR2 cannot have Radiant Red Tintcoat or Lakeshore Blue Metallic.

2027 Winter Spec, as an Order Checklist
None of the winter equipment changed for 2027, which makes this a checklist rather than a news item. Work through it before you sign an order and the truck arrives ready.
- Snow plow prep, if there is any chance of a blade. It brings the high-output alternator, an increased front axle rating, skid plates, the dash grommet and the roof light provisions. It needs 4WD and it cannot be combined with the bed delete.
- The dual alternator if the truck will run a plow, a sander and a light bar at the same time.
- The Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition on a Work Truck or an LT. For 2027 it brings the 18-inch high gloss black aluminium wheel on a Work Truck, which is a nicer-looking truck than the edition used to produce.
- The Duramax cold-weather content is included with the engine: block heater, exhaust brake, high-output alternator and the winter grille cover. Plug the block heater in the night before, not the morning of.
- The two-speed automatic transfer case and the locking rear differential, which are how the truck actually gets out of a drift.
- Adaptive cruise, which you now have on every trim, and which is the right tool for a hundred miles of Highway 12 behind a slow load.
Chevrolet publishes no plow weight limit and no blade specification, and we are not going to invent one. If a county or township contract requires a specific front axle figure, bring the contract and we will read the ratings for the exact configuration with you.
How It Stacks Up
Any 2027 cross-shop is an equipment comparison, not a numbers comparison, because nobody in this class has published a complete 2027 rating set yet. On equipment, the Chevrolet argument for 2027 is adaptive cruise standard across the whole range including the work truck, the Multi-Flex tailgate, and the ZR2 continuing as the only factory off-road three-quarter-ton.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually changed for 2027?
Both engine codes, the Allison name on the transmission, the elimination of 17-inch wheels and tires, adaptive cruise going standard on all six trims, an upgraded pedestrian and bicyclist braking system, a rebuilt gross vehicle weight rating menu with a higher ceiling, the deletion of the Stars and Steel edition and of E85, and a new ZR2 wheel code. Chevrolet marks none of it as new, so every item there came from reading the 2027 documents against the 2026 ones.
The engine codes changed. Are these new engines?
We do not know, and that is the honest answer. Chevrolet changed both codes and printed no displacement, horsepower or torque alongside them. A code change can mean anything from a new emissions calibration to a genuinely revised engine. What it definitely means is that you should not assume the previous year's figures apply.
Is there an Allison transmission in it now?
The 2027 documentation names the transmission an Allison 10-Speed automatic on every row. The 2026 documentation carries no such name anywhere. Whether that reflects a hardware change or a branding decision is not something the specifications say, so we will not tell you which it is.
What does a 12,300 lb gross vehicle weight rating tell me?
That the truck plus everything in and on it may legally weigh up to 12,300 lb, on a Crew Cab long bed 4WD with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package. It does not tell you payload, because payload is that figure minus the truck's own weight, and 2027 curb weights are not published. It is a 400 lb increase over the same 2026 configuration, which is encouraging and is not yet something you can plan a load around.
Are the 2027 towing ratings published?
No. There are no 2027 conventional or gooseneck ratings, no combination weight ratings, no payload figures and no dimensions. If you find a site quoting one, check whether it is a previous year's number with this year's headline on it. We will publish 2027 ratings the day Chevrolet does.
Did the ZR2 change?
Not mechanically. The suspension, dampers, 35-inch tires, locking rear differential, skid plates, recovery hooks, interior and audio all carry over. The wheel has a new code and the etched logo wording was dropped from the description. It is still a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed truck only, and the Max Trailering Package is still not offered on it.
Is the Stars and Steel Special Edition coming back?
It is not in the 2027 lineup. The Special Edition, the LT appearance package version and the graphics accessory are all deleted. If you want one, it is a 2026 truck, and special editions on heavy-duty trucks rarely run the full model year. Call us before the order bank closes rather than after.
Should I buy a 2026 now or order a 2027?
Buy a 2026 if you tow, if you need the truck this season, or if you want the Stars and Steel edition or an E85 Work Truck. Every 2026 figure is published and attached to a configuration. Order a 2027 if you want adaptive cruise on a work truck, the higher weight rating ceiling, or a specific build we do not have on the ground, and if your timeline can absorb an order. The long version is here.
