2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD: The Mobridge, SD Buyers Guide

Six trims, two 6.6L V8s, what each configuration is actually rated for, and which one is standing in the yard today. Written from the 2026 Chevrolet specifications for people who hitch something to the back of the truck most weeks of the year.

What Is New for 2026

Chevrolet flags exactly five things as new on the 2026 Silverado 2500 HD, and the specification documents print no comparison against the 2025 truck. That is worth saying plainly, because a lot of pages will tell you this is an all-new heavy-duty. It is not. It is a settled truck in the middle of its run, with two new paint colours and a special edition.

Stars and Steel Special Edition

An LTZ-only, Duramax-only edition for the United States market. If you want one, order early; special editions on heavy-duty trucks do not usually run the full model year.

Stars and Steel Appearance Package

The LT version of the same theme, available as an appearance package rather than a full edition, plus a separate graphics accessory.

White Sands

A warm pale sand beige, new for 2026, and notably not available on Work Truck or LT. It is a Custom, ZR2, LTZ and High Country colour.

Polar White Tricoat

Also new for 2026, a premium tricoat white on the upper trims, and not offered on the ZR2 or the LTZ.

Everything else about the 2026 truck is carried over, which is genuinely good news if you are buying one to work. The 2027 changes are a different story, and some of them matter: new engine codes, the Allison name appearing on the transmission, 17-inch wheels and tires eliminated, and adaptive cruise going standard across the line.

Two 6.6L V8s, and the Engine Picks Your Axle

There are two engines and no axle decision. The gas L8T makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm and comes with a 3.73 axle. The L5P Duramax turbo-diesel makes 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm and comes with a 3.42 axle. Both run a 10-speed automatic. People arriving from a half-ton order sheet expect to choose a ratio; on a 2500 HD the engine chooses it for you.

  6.6L Gas V8 (L8T) 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel (L5P)
Output 401 hp, 464 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm 470 hp, 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm
Axle and transmission 3.73 axle, 10-speed automatic 3.42 axle, 10-speed automatic
What comes with it An E85-capable version is offered on the Work Truck for 2026 and is deleted for 2027 Engine block heater, exhaust brake and a 220-amp alternator, plus a winter grille cover. A fleet and government regeneration option is available on Work Truck and LT only.
Conventional towing, Crew Cab Up to 16,000 lb 18,500 lb, or 20,000 lb with the Max Trailering Package
Gross combination weight rating Tops out at 26,000 lb 24,500, 26,000, 27,500 or 30,000 lb by configuration

The 2026 Chevrolet specifications print no Allison name on either transmission. That name appears for 2027. Every figure assumes a properly equipped truck.

Which one should you buy?

Gas, if the truck is a contractor's rig doing under roughly fifteen thousand miles a year with a 12,000 lb trailer behind it a few times a month. You get more payload, a simpler cold-weather story, and no diesel exhaust fluid to think about. A gas Crew Cab still carries 3,937 lb and pulls 16,000 lb conventional, which covers most dump trailers and equipment decks in this county.

Duramax, if you hook a loaded gooseneck weekly, if you pull grades with cattle or hay behind you, or if you are near the top of the rating either way. The 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm is the difference between working the engine and using it, and the exhaust brake matters more coming down into the river breaks than any towing number on a spec sheet.

Two bales high on a gooseneck flatbed is a Duramax job, and it is also a gross combination weight rating question before it is a tow rating question.

The Six-Trim Ladder

Work Truck, Custom, LT, ZR2, LTZ and High Country. Not every trim comes in every cab and drive combination, and those restrictions decide more orders than the feature lists do.

Trim How it can be ordered Screens and audio Best for
Work Truck Every cab, bed and drive combination 7-inch centre display, 3.5-inch cluster Fleets, upfits and the published payload and gooseneck maximums
Custom Crew Cab and Double Cab only 7-inch centre display, 3.5-inch cluster A work truck you also drive on Sunday, with the Custom Blackout look
LT 4WD only 13.4-inch centre screen with Google built-in, 12.3-inch cluster The volume trim, and where the Z71 Off-Road Package is usually ordered
ZR2 4WD Crew Cab standard bed only 13.4-inch screen, 12.3-inch cluster, 7-speaker Bose standard Off-road capability with no equivalent anywhere else in the heavy-duty market
LTZ 4WD Crew Cab, standard or long bed 13.4-inch screen, 12.3-inch cluster, Bose available with the premium group Long days towing, where the camera and comfort packages actually earn their money
High Country 4WD Crew Cab, standard or long bed 13.4-inch screen, 12.3-inch cluster, 7-speaker Bose standard The loaded truck, with adaptive cruise standard and the lowest payload in the range

Two notes that catch people. First, the top audio system is a seven-speaker Bose. There is no twelve-speaker system on this truck, whatever a comparison chart somewhere tells you. Second, the Texas Edition packages cannot be ordered from Mobridge; they are regional and we are not in the region.

Worth it / skip it

Worth it: the step from Custom to LT. It brings 4WD as standard, the 13.4-inch screen and, more importantly for towing, the 12.3-inch driver cluster where the trailer information actually lives. It is the single most useful rung on this ladder.

Skip it, usually: the step from LTZ to High Country if you tow at capacity. You gain adaptive cruise as standard and a nicer interior, and you give up payload: 3,357 lb with the gas V8 and 3,195 lb with the Duramax, the lowest in the range. If the pin weight is already tight, that is the wrong direction.

Work Truck and Custom: Where the Headline Numbers Live

The value end of the ladder is not a consolation prize on a heavy-duty truck. It is where the published maximums are, and the reason is simple arithmetic: payload is gross vehicle weight rating minus what the truck already weighs. Every pound of leather, glass, chrome and sound deadening above the Work Truck comes out of what you can carry.

Both of the 2026 headline figures belong down here. The 4,081 lb payload maximum is a Regular Cab long bed 2WD Work Truck with the gas V8. The 22,070 lb gooseneck maximum is a Work Truck or Custom Crew Cab long bed 2WD with the Duramax, the Max Trailering Package and the gooseneck prep package, properly equipped. Neither of them is a High Country.

The Work Truck equipment groups

There are two convenience groups plus a safety package, and which one you take is the gate for several other options, including the Max Trailering Package and the Multi-Flex tailgate. Ask before you order, not after.

The Custom Duramax gate

You cannot simply tick the Duramax on a Custom. It requires the higher Custom equipment group, and that catches people building a cheap diesel work truck on paper.

Power take-off

Available on Work Truck, Custom and LT with 4WD and the Duramax. For 2026 it cannot be combined with adaptive cruise control. If you are running a dump bed or a bale bed, this is the option that matters.

Lowered gross vehicle weight rating

A deliberate 10,000 lb option. Fleets take it for licensing and regulatory reasons, and it is a real reduction in what the truck may legally carry, so take it on purpose or not at all.

Also down here: the bed delete for a flatbed or a service body, snow plow prep, dual alternators, a trailer brake wiring provision, and the Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition on Work Truck and LT. If the truck is going to a body shop before it goes to work, tell us at the order stage and we will build it so the upfitter does not have to undo anything.

A Regular Cab long box Work Truck is the configuration behind the 4,081 lb payload figure, and it is still the most useful shape in a county shop yard.

ZR2 and Z71: The Rung With No Sibling

The ZR2 is the one Silverado 2500 HD trim with no counterpart anywhere else in the GM heavy-duty lineup, and no direct factory equivalent from anyone else. It is a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed truck only, built on the higher LT equipment group.

What the ZR2 brings Detail
Suspension A lifted off-road suspension with Multimatic DSSV dampers, which is spool-valve damping rather than a conventional shock
Tires and wheels 35-inch Goodyear Territory mud-terrain tires on 18-inch gloss black wheels with an etched ZR2 logo, and a matching spare
Traction An electronic locking rear differential in place of the automatic locker used elsewhere in the range, plus the two-speed automatic transfer case and hill descent control
Protection A dedicated skid-plate set and red front recovery hooks
Ground clearance and height 11.61 in of ground clearance and 82.68 in of overall height, against 10.12 in and 79.82 in on a standard truck

What it costs you, stated first

The Max Trailering Package is not available on the ZR2. Its gooseneck rating is 18,100 lb on either engine, properly equipped, where a plain LT Crew Cab with the Duramax and the package reaches 21,600 lb. Payload is 3,402 lb with the gas V8 and 3,200 lb with the Duramax.

There is one interior and six legal colours. If you want an off-road heavy-duty truck, nothing else is built like this. If your main job is a loaded gooseneck every week, order an LT with the Z71 package and the Max Trailering Package instead, and you will be happier with both numbers.

The Z71 Off-Road Package is the other, much more common answer. It brings Rancho twin-tube shocks, hill descent control, skid plates, 17-inch all-terrain tires and the Z71 fender badge, it requires 4WD, and it is available on five trims. It is not available on the ZR2, because the ZR2 already carries more than the package contains. The Bison Edition sits above the ZR2 as an option package with heavier underbody protection and its own exterior treatment, and it deletes two items the standard ZR2 carries.

Conventional and Gooseneck Ratings

A towing number means nothing without the configuration attached to it. Every figure below names the cab, bed, drive and engine it belongs to, and every one assumes a properly equipped truck. Chevrolet puts tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent of the trailer on a conventional hitch, and kingpin load at 15 to 25 percent on a gooseneck or fifth-wheel.

Configuration Conventional Gooseneck or fifth-wheel
Crew Cab standard bed 4WD, Duramax (CK20743) 18,500 lb, or 20,000 lb with the Max Trailering Package 19,100 lb, or 21,600 lb with the package — the highest 4WD Crew Cab figure
Crew Cab long bed 4WD, Duramax (CK20943) 18,500 lb, or 20,000 lb with the package 19,000 lb, or 21,490 lb with the package
Crew Cab long bed 2WD, Duramax (CC20943) 18,500 lb, or 20,000 lb with the package 22,070 lb with the package, the published maximum, on a Work Truck or Custom
Regular Cab long bed 4WD, Duramax (CK20903) 18,500 lb, or 20,000 lb with the package 22,050 lb with the package, the highest 4WD figure in the range
Any Crew Cab, gas V8 Up to 16,000 lb 18,280 to 18,500 lb by configuration
ZR2, either engine Rated below the equivalent LT, with no Max Trailering Package available 18,100 lb
High Country Rated below the equivalent LT Rated below the equivalent LT, because the truck itself weighs more

The gross combination weight rating is the ceiling that actually catches working outfits, because it covers the truck and the trailer together. The ladder is 24,500, 26,000, 27,500 and 30,000 lb, with 27,500 available on a Crew Cab running 18-inch or 20-inch wheels and 30,000 taking the Max Trailering Package. The gas V8 stops at 26,000 lb no matter what else is on the truck.

Numbers to ignore

If a page quotes a Silverado 2500 HD at thirty-something thousand pounds on a gooseneck, it is quoting a 3500 HD dually and it has the wrong truck. And any towing figure published without a cab, a bed, a drive, an engine and a package attached to it is not a rating, it is a headline. The trailering information label in the driver door jamb of the specific truck is the final word.

Gooseneck towing math for Mobridge ranches · What Max Trailering actually adds

2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD LT in Sterling Gray Metallic pulling a loaded gooseneck stock trailer in the Missouri River breaks near Mobridge
A 4WD Crew Cab standard bed with the Duramax carries 19,100 lb on a gooseneck as it sits, and 21,600 lb with the Max Trailering Package.

Max Trailering and the Capability Packages

The Max Trailering Package is four things, and Chevrolet lists them plainly: a 3500 HD frame, 3500 HD leaf springs, a 12-inch rear axle and a 3500 HD shock package. That is the whole contents. It is a running-gear package, not a convenience group, and it does not include the spray-on bedliner people associate with it. That comes from the gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep package instead.

What it requires

The gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep package, the Duramax, and 18-inch or 20-inch wheels. Work Truck and Custom each need their own equipment group on top of that. Chevrolet also notes that bed caps for the holes will not be provided.

Who cannot get it

The ZR2, every Double Cab, the 2WD Regular Cab long bed for 2026, and any truck ordered with the bed delete. Those are hard exclusions, not preferences.

What it changes

Conventional towing to 20,000 lb, gooseneck to 21,600 lb on a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed and 22,070 lb on a 2WD Crew Cab long bed, the combination rating to 30,000 lb, and the gross vehicle weight rating as high as 11,900 lb.

The rest of the capability menu

Gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep with the ball kit, snow plow prep, the bed delete, a trailer tire pressure monitoring provision and power take-off. Most of these are ordered, not added later.

The honest version

Most trailers in this county do not need it. A plain 4WD Crew Cab standard bed with the Duramax already carries 19,100 lb on a gooseneck and 18,500 lb conventional. Here is the test: weigh your heaviest load, add a margin, and if it clears 19,000 lb comfortably then the package is buying you a number you will not use. If you regularly run a loaded tandem-dual deck or you want the combination rating headroom, order it.

Factory gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep: the ball opening in the centre of the floor, four capped mounting holes and the bed-mounted seven-pin connector. This is the package that brings the spray-on liner.

Payload, GVWR and the Number That Actually Stops You

Almost nobody runs out of tow rating around here. People run out of payload, because the kingpin load of a loaded gooseneck lands in the bed before anything else does. Payload figures below are for trucks on 18-inch or 20-inch wheels; the 17-inch rows are excluded because those trucks are rated lower and are going away for 2027 anyway.

Configuration Gas V8 Duramax
Regular Cab long bed 2WD 4,081 lb, the 2026 maximum Lower, because the engine weighs more
Crew Cab long bed 4WD 3,937 lb, the Crew Cab maximum 3,748 lb
Crew Cab standard bed 4WD 3,779 lb 3,583 lb
ZR2 3,402 lb 3,200 lb
High Country 3,357 lb 3,195 lb, the lowest in the range

Gross vehicle weight rating runs 10,350 to 11,550 lb across the specification tables, and the option menu reaches 11,900 lb on a Crew Cab long bed 4WD with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package. Front and rear axle ratings are printed per configuration and are the limits that a badly loaded truck actually exceeds first.

A worked illustration, not a rating

Take a 14,000 lb gooseneck. At a 20 percent kingpin load that is 2,800 lb sitting in the bed. Put it on a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed with the Duramax, which carries 3,583 lb. You have 783 lb left, and the toolbox, the fuel caddy, five people and the dog are all still standing on the ground.

That is the arithmetic that sends people to the long bed, to the gas engine, or to a one-ton. It is also why the harvest and hotshot crowd talks about the 30,000 lb combination rating rather than the tow rating: on a long working combination, the ceiling on truck-plus-trailer is what you meet first.

If that arithmetic keeps coming out short, the Silverado 3500 HD is the next step

Standard Bed or Long Bed?

Standard bed on the near truck, the eight-foot long box on the far one. Sixteen inches of bed and thirteen inches of wheelbase.
  Standard bed Long bed
Bed length and volume 82.25 in, 69.5 cu ft 98.27 in, 83.5 cu ft
Wheelbase and overall length 159 in and 250.04 in 172 in and 266.06 in
Turning circle 52.7 ft 57 ft
Payload, 4WD Crew Cab 3,779 lb gas, 3,583 lb diesel 3,937 lb gas, 3,748 lb diesel
Gooseneck, 4WD Crew Cab Duramax 19,100 lb, or 21,600 lb with Max Trailering 19,000 lb, or 21,490 lb with Max Trailering

The long box gains you 165 lb of payload and costs you 4.3 ft of turning circle. Every Silverado 2500 HD on our lot today is the 82.25-inch standard bed, which tells you what most people around here choose. Order the long box if you haul 8-foot panels flat, run a post driver, or plan to put a slide-in camper in it. Take the standard bed if the truck spends its week between town, the shop and the home place.

The full bed-length comparison

The Multi-Flex Tailgate and What It Requires

Chevrolet describes it as a multi-function tailgate with six functional load and access features, and it is available on every trim, standard within the equipment group on the ZR2. It is genuinely useful. It is also gated behind an equipment group on every single trim, which is where orders go wrong.

Trim What you have to order first
Work TruckEither convenience group
CustomThe Custom convenience group
LTThe LT convenience group
LTZThe LTZ premium group plus the power up and down tailgate
High CountryThe power up and down tailgate

Two hard exclusions: it cannot be combined with the power-release tailgate, and it cannot be combined with the bed delete. One practical note worth knowing before you hitch a ball in the bed: the automatic release can be disabled when a ball hitch is installed, which is exactly what you want. The tailgate audio accessory requires the Multi-Flex tailgate and is an LTZ and High Country item.

One piece of honesty: Chevrolet does not name the six functions in its specifications, and it does not publish a step weight rating for the tailgate. We are not going to invent either. Come look at one and work it with your hands, because that is the only way to know whether it is worth the equipment group it sits behind. And it is Multi-Flex on a Chevrolet — the truck on the other side of our lot wears a different name for a different tailgate.

The Multi-Flex tailgate, and whether it is worth the group

Horse Trailers and Fifth-Wheels

Lake Oahe brings a lot of fifth-wheels through town, and rodeo season brings a lot of living-quarters horse trailers. Both of them are payload problems before they are towing problems: pin weight runs 15 to 25 percent of the loaded trailer, and it lands in the bed alongside the tack, the water and the people.

Do that arithmetic first. Then, if the truck is going to be lived in for three hours at a stretch, the LTZ package ladder is where the Chevrolet answer sits: the premium group with bucket seats, heated and ventilated seating, the power tailgate, the Bose system and wireless charging; then the convenience group above it with the sliding rear window, heated rear outboard seats and adaptive cruise control; then the technology group with the 15-inch head-up display and the rear camera mirror.

For the hitching itself: hitch guidance with hitch view, the trailering app, the HD surround vision and bed view cameras in the LT and LTZ camera package, provisions for an accessory camera, and trailer tire pressure monitoring. All of it makes backing a 38-foot trailer into a lake site a one-person job.

You probably do not need the Max Trailering Package for a fifth-wheel. Most fifth-wheels that a family tows sit well under 19,000 lb loaded, which a plain Duramax Crew Cab already covers. Spend the money on the cameras and the seats instead, and keep the payload conversation honest.

Built for a Dakota Winter

Snow plow prep is the option that matters, and it is more than a wiring harness. It brings the 220-amp alternator, an increased front axle weight rating, skid plates, a dash grommet for the plow controls and provisions for a roof emergency light. It requires 4WD and it cannot be combined with the bed delete, which catches flatbed orders every year.

Electrical

A dual alternator option sits above the single 220-amp unit for trucks running a plow, a sander and a light bar at once.

Diesel cold-weather kit

The Duramax already includes the block heater and the exhaust brake, and a winter grille cover comes with it. Use the block heater, and plug it in the night before, not the morning of.

Traction

An automatic locking rear differential across most of the range, an electronic locker on the ZR2, the two-speed automatic transfer case, and stability control with electronic trailer sway control.

Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition

A Work Truck and LT edition built around the plow story, worth asking about if the truck is going on a county or township contract.

What Chevrolet does not publish, and what we will not guess at: a plow weight limit, a blade specification, a cold-start procedure, glow-plug behaviour or a diesel exhaust fluid tank size. If a plow contract requires a specific front axle number, bring the contract and we will read the axle ratings for the exact configuration with you.

Colours and Interiors, With the Footnotes That Govern an Order

Nine colours across the range, but no trim gets all nine, and four of them are barred from at least one trim. This is the part of an order that people get wrong most often, because a colour swatch on a configurator does not always tell you it is unavailable on the trim you picked.

Colour Work Truck, Custom, LT ZR2, LTZ, High Country

BlackYesYes
Sterling Gray MetallicYesYes
Lakeshore Blue MetallicYesLTZ and High Country only, not the ZR2

White Sands (new for 2026)Custom only, not Work Truck or LTYes
Polar White Tricoat (new for 2026)NoHigh Country only, not ZR2 or LTZ

Interiors follow the trim: cloth on Work Truck and Custom, cloth or leather-appointed seating through LT and LTZ, and the full leather treatment on the High Country. The ZR2 has one interior and that is the end of the conversation.

One naming note that matters if you are cross-shopping inside our own lot: several of these paints are the same finish that the other GM brand sells under a completely different name. On a Chevrolet order sheet the Chevrolet name is the only one that exists, and mixing them up gets an order built wrong.

Every 2026 colour, by trim, with the restrictions

Safety, Cameras and Trailering Tech

Standard on all six trims: lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, forward collision alert, automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking and front pedestrian braking, plus the full airbag package. Chevrolet lists these individually rather than bundling them under a marketing name, and that is a real difference from how some other brands present the same content. We are not going to invent a bundle name that does not exist.

The Work Truck and Custom safety package

Adds rear cross traffic alert and lane change alert with side blind zone alert to the standard content. Worth it on a fleet truck that spends its life backing out of yards.

The LT and LTZ camera package

The one to order if you tow. HD surround vision, a bed view camera, provisions for an accessory trailer camera, the trailering app and the blind zone hardware in one box. On a Regular Cab three of the camera items are omitted.

The technology package

A 15-inch head-up display and a rear camera mirror, and it brings adaptive cruise with it. Standard within the group on the ZR2, available on LTZ and High Country, and not offered at all on Work Truck, Custom or LT.

Adaptive cruise control

Standard only on the High Country for 2026, and available elsewhere through the packages above. It goes standard across the line for 2027.

Trailering hardware is standard and it is good: the trailering equipment package, the trailering information label in the door jamb, hitch guidance, an integrated trailer brake controller and the transmission and engine oil coolers. You do not have to order your way up to a usable tow truck on this platform, which is not true of every half-ton.

What changes on the safety content for 2027

Silverado or Sierra?

We sell both, usually parked forty feet apart, so here is the honest answer. Same frame, same two 6.6L V8s, same trailering hardware. Conventional ratings are identical on every shared configuration, and base gooseneck ratings match on eight of the ten shared rows.

Where they genuinely part company is payload, curb weight and every dimension. A Crew Cab standard bed 2WD Silverado carries 3,798 lb where the equivalent Sierra carries 3,723 lb, and the Silverado is 250.04 in long against 250.75 in. Those are small numbers that come from real differences in how the two trucks are built and equipped, and they are the reason you should never read a figure off one brand's specifications and apply it to the other.

The bigger differences are the trim ladders and the tailgates, and the top of each ladder is a genuinely different truck. The ZR2 has no sibling at all. If an off-road heavy-duty is what you want, the decision is already made for you.

How It Stacks Up Against the F-250 and Ram 2500

We are not going to print a competitor's figures on this page, because they change and because a page like this one is the wrong place for a moving target. What we will say is where the Chevrolet argument actually is: the ZR2, which has no factory equivalent in the three-quarter-ton class; the Multi-Flex tailgate; and payload, where the Work Truck and Custom configurations are genuinely strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between conventional and gooseneck towing?

A conventional hitch pulls from a receiver behind the rear bumper and carries 10 to 15 percent of the trailer on the tongue. A gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch mounts over the rear axle in the bed and carries 15 to 25 percent of the trailer as kingpin load. Because the weight sits over the axle instead of behind it, the gooseneck rating is higher: 19,100 lb against 18,500 lb on a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed with the Duramax, properly equipped.

How much payload is left after pin weight?

Work it out on the exact truck. A 14,000 lb gooseneck at a 20 percent kingpin load puts 2,800 lb in the bed. On a 4WD Crew Cab standard bed with the Duramax, which carries 3,583 lb, that leaves 783 lb for everything and everyone else. That is a tight number once you add a toolbox and a family, which is why this question decides more purchases than the tow rating does.

Does the Duramax include a block heater and an exhaust brake?

Yes. The engine block heater, the exhaust brake and a 220-amp alternator all come with the Duramax, along with a winter grille cover. You do not have to order them separately, and on a truck that lives outside in a South Dakota January all three of them earn their keep.

LT or LTZ?

LT if the truck works, LTZ if you sit in it for hours. They share the 13.4-inch screen and the 12.3-inch cluster, so the real gap is seating, the camera package availability and the comfort groups. LT also keeps more payload, which matters if you are near the limit.

Is the High Country worth it?

If you drive it more than you load it, yes. Adaptive cruise is standard, the technology package with the 15-inch head-up display and the rear camera mirror is available, and the seven-speaker Bose is standard. If you load it at capacity, no: its payload is the lowest in the range at 3,357 lb with the gas V8 and 3,195 lb with the Duramax.

Z71 or ZR2?

The Z71 Off-Road Package is a shock, skid plate and all-terrain tire package available on five trims with 4WD. The ZR2 is a separate trim with a lifted suspension, Multimatic DSSV dampers, 35-inch mud-terrains, an electronic locking rear differential and 11.61 in of ground clearance. The ZR2 is far more capable off pavement and it gives up towing to get there, because the Max Trailering Package is not offered on it.

Which trims can get the Multi-Flex tailgate?

All six, but every one of them requires an equipment group first, and on the LTZ and High Country it also requires the power tailgate. It cannot be combined with the power-release tailgate or with the bed delete. Tell us you want it at the order stage, because it is not something that gets added afterwards.

What locking differential does it have?

Most of the range runs an automatic locking rear differential. The ZR2 gets an electronic locking rear differential instead, which you engage deliberately rather than waiting for it to catch. There is no front locker on this truck, whatever a comparison chart tells you.

Silverado 2500 HD or Sierra 2500 HD?

Same frame, same engines, same trailering hardware, and identical conventional ratings on every shared configuration. Different trim ladders, different tailgates, and different payload, curb weight and dimensions. The ZR2 exists only on the Silverado. We stock both and they usually sit forty feet apart, so walk them back to back. The full head-to-head is here.

Do I need a 3500 HD instead?

Use the pin weight rule, not the tow rating. Loaded trailer weight times 20 percent, plus people and gear, compared against the payload of the exact truck. If it clears with room to spare, a 2500 HD is the better daily truck. If it is close or over, or you are at capacity most weeks, step up. The Silverado 3500 HD page works that question all the way through.

Bring your loaded trailer weight and your pin weight. We will put them against the trailering label in the door jamb of the exact truck and tell you plainly whether it is the right one. Beadle Chevrolet GMC, 2200 US Hwy 12, Mobridge, SD 57601 — call or text 605-845-7277.

Written by Lexy Tabbert, Director of Sales and Marketing, Beadle Auto Group. All ratings are 2026 figures for properly equipped trucks and depend on cab, bed, drive, engine, axle and packages. The trailering information label in the driver door jamb of the individual truck is the final word.
