The One-Ton for the Outfit That Hauls at Capacity
Dual rear wheels or single rear wheel, a 401-horsepower 6.6L gas V8 or the 470-horsepower Duramax turbo-diesel with 975 lb-ft, six trims from the Pro work truck to the Denali Ultimate, and a 14,000-pound GVWR on every dually. New and pre-owned Sierra 3500 HD trucks at Beadle Chevrolet GMC, 2200 US Hwy 12 in Mobridge.
Properly equipped, a 2026 Sierra 3500 HD with the Duramax is rated to tow up to 20,000 pounds on a conventional hitch on every configuration except the single-rear-wheel Regular Cab, and a 4WD Crew Cab long bed dually is rated up to 31,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch. Step down to that same crew cab as a single rear wheel and the gooseneck rating is 21,460 pounds, which is still more truck than most trailers around here need.
The 36,000-pound headline belongs to exactly one truck: the 2WD Regular Cab long bed dually with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package, and 35,500 pounds for that same Regular Cab truck without it. That package is a Pro, 2WD, Regular Cab, dually-only option on the 3500 HD, so the crew cab trucks on our lot are rated on their own springs. Bring us your loaded trailer weight and your pin weight and we will match them to the trailering information label in the driver door jamb of the specific truck, which is always the final word.
Why Buy a Sierra 3500 HD in Mobridge?
A one-ton is not a bigger three-quarter-ton with nicer badges. It is a heavier rear axle, heavier springs, a 14,000-pound GVWR the moment you add dual rear wheels, and a rear axle rated at 10,400 pounds instead of 7,250. That is the difference between carrying the kingpin load of a loaded tandem-dual stock trailer and running out of payload long before the tow rating.
Both 6.6L V8s carry over: the gas engine with 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft, or the Duramax turbo-diesel with 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft, each with a 10-speed automatic. On our lot as this is written we have SLT crew cab long bed duallys in Volcanic Red and Summit White plus a Denali single rear wheel in Onyx Black, and we can order a Pro or SLE work truck, a Double Cab dually, or a Denali Ultimate the way you want it. Buy it here and it gets serviced here.

Fuel is 36 gallons, or 28 on the Regular Cab diesel. | |
| Standard trailering gear | Trailer hitch with 7-pin and 4-pin connectors, integrated brake controller, Hitch Guidance, trailer sway control, an auto-locking rear differential, and the trailering label on every trim. Hitch View and the In-Vehicle Trailering App are standard on SLT and up. | |
Dually or Single Rear Wheel? Three Rules
One. Weigh the trailer loaded the way you actually load it, then compare it to the gooseneck rating of the exact truck.
Two. Take 15 to 25 percent of that weight as kingpin load, add the people and the bed cargo, and compare the total to payload. That is the number that sends most buyers to the dually.
Three. Count how often you are at that weight. Twice a year is a rental. Every week is a dually.
Read the Dually vs Single Rear Wheel GuideWhat most buyers overlook: the tow rating almost never decides this truck. On a 4WD Crew Cab long bed Duramax, payload goes from 4,195 pounds as a single rear wheel to 5,647 as a dually. A 25-percent kingpin load on a 24,000-pound gooseneck is 6,000 pounds by itself. The other half of the decision is 14.77 inches of extra width, so measure your shop door and your gate before you sign. See the full single-rear-wheel and dually comparison.
Sierra 3500 HD Trims: Who Each One Is For
Six trims, and no AT4X on the one-ton. Pro is the only trim offered in 2WD, SLT and up are Crew Cab 4WD, and the AT4 is the one trim that cannot be built as a dually.
| Trim | Cabs and drive | Dual rear wheels | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Regular, Double, or Crew Cab; the only trim offered in 2WD | Yes, long bed only | Fleets, flatbeds, and bed deletes. The only trim that can take the Max Trailering Package |
| SLE | Regular, Double, or Crew Cab; 4WD | Yes, long bed only | The working dually: carpet, a 13.4-inch Google built-in screen, EZ Lift tailgate, available power take-off |
| SLT | Crew Cab 4WD | Yes, long bed only | Most gooseneck buyers. Leather, ProGrade Trailering with Hitch View, Autotrac transfer case, available MultiPro tailgate |
| AT4 | Crew Cab 4WD | No, single rear wheel only | Pasture two-tracks and winter, with off-road suspension, skid plates, and 20-inch gloss black wheels. Skip it if the trailer needs a dually |
| Denali | Crew Cab 4WD | Yes, long bed only | Long highway miles with a fifth-wheel and a family aboard. Chrome grille, Forge leather, Bose 7-speaker, MultiPro tailgate, gas or Duramax |
| Denali Ultimate | Crew Cab 4WD, Duramax only | Yes, long bed only | The most comfortable one-ton GM builds: Alpine Umber leather, 16-way massaging front seats, a 15-inch head-up display, 12-speaker Bose |

Need Less Truck? The Sierra 2500 HD Is on the Same Lot
If your loaded gooseneck stays under 19,000 pounds and the kingpin load clears the payload of a Crew Cab long bed 4WD Duramax, the three-quarter-ton is the easier truck to live with: narrower, softer empty, four tires instead of six. Compare them on the same afternoon and buy the one that fits your trailer.
The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD is the same truck under a different grille, and we sell it here too, so ask us to park one beside the Sierra.
See Sierra 2500 HD InventoryGMC Sierra 3500 HD — Common Questions
Should I buy a single rear wheel or a dually Sierra 3500 HD?
Run two numbers on the same truck. On a 4WD Crew Cab long bed with the Duramax, properly equipped, the gooseneck rating is 21,460 pounds as a single rear wheel and 31,000 as a dually; payload is 4,195 pounds against 5,647. Take 15 to 25 percent of your loaded trailer weight as kingpin load, add passengers and bed cargo, and if that total is close to payload, buy the dually. Work through the decision here.
How much wider is a Sierra 3500 HD dually?
14.77 inches. A single-rear-wheel Sierra 3500 HD is 81.85 inches across the body and a dually is 96.62 inches, measured fender to fender without mirrors. Take that number to your shop door, your gate posts, and the car wash before you order. A dually also sits a little lower in back, 10.39 inches of rear ground clearance against 11.14, and puts six tires on the ground instead of four. See the side-by-side dimensions.
Is there a Max Trailering Package on the Sierra 3500 HD, and what is the combination rating?
There is, but it is far more restricted than the one on the three-quarter-ton. It can only be built as a Pro, 2WD, Regular Cab long bed dually with the Duramax, and it bundles heavy-duty front springs, 18-inch polished forged wheels, LT235/80R18 tires, and gooseneck prep. For gross combination weight rating, a gas truck is 26,000 pounds, a Duramax single rear wheel 30,000, and a Duramax dually 40,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch. With a fifth-wheel hitch the combination rating is 32,000 pounds. Read how a working combination is calculated.
Which Sierra 3500 HD is rated to pull 36,000 pounds, and is it a Regular Cab?
It is: the 2WD Regular Cab long bed dually with the Duramax and the Max Trailering Package, rated 36,000 pounds on a gooseneck, properly equipped, or 35,500 pounds as that same Regular Cab dually without it. The package is a Pro, 2WD, Regular Cab, dually-only option on the 3500 HD, so the crew cab trucks on our lot are rated on their own springs at 31,440 pounds in 2WD and 31,000 in 4WD. See the gooseneck numbers by cab.
Is there an AT4X version of the Sierra 3500 HD?
No. The 3500 HD lineup is six trims: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. The AT4X and its AEV Edition are three-quarter-ton trucks only. On the one-ton the AT4 is single rear wheel only, so it cannot be ordered as a dually. If you want the off-road look with dually capacity, an SLT or Denali dually is the way there.
Can you get the Sierra 3500 HD Denali Ultimate with the gas engine?
No. The Denali Ultimate comes only with the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel, in Crew Cab 4WD, as a single rear wheel or a dually. If you want that look with the 401-hp gas V8, order the Denali, which is offered with either engine. GM does not publish a payload figure for the Denali, so there the number that counts is the one on the door-jamb label.
