2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD: The Mobridge, SD Buyers Guide
What changed for 2026, which engine and package to spec, and what each cab, bed, and trim is actually rated to tow. Every number below is from the 2026 GMC Sierra HD order guide, written for ranches, Lake Oahe weekends, and the long drives in from Bismarck, Aberdeen, and Pierre.
What Is New for the 2026 Sierra 2500 HD?
The 2026 Sierra 2500 HD is a carryover year for the hardware that matters. Both 6.6L V8s, both 10-speed automatics, the axle ratios, the frame, and every trailer rating are identical to 2025. What changed is on the outside:
- Coastal Dune (G42), a new warm tan, offered on Pro, SLE, AT4, and AT4X. It is not offered on SLT, Denali, or Denali Ultimate.
- Glacier White Tricoat (G4J), a new pearl white, offered on SLT, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. It is not offered on AT4 or AT4X.
- 20-inch bright-face aluminum wheels with dark painted pockets (Q7J), new with the X31 Off-Road and Protection Package on SLE and SLT.
- An 18-inch spare wheel (QNN) as a new option.
Everything else you may have read about, including the 13.4-inch Google built-in screen, the 12.3-inch digital cluster, the AT4X AEV Edition, and the Denali Ultimate with massaging seats, arrived in earlier years and continues unchanged. If you are choosing between a 2025 on the lot and a 2026, the paint chart is the only difference you will feel. A 2027 order guide is already out with new engine codes and a higher GVWR ceiling; see what is new for 2027 before you decide to buy now or order.
The MultiPro tailgate, standard on SLT and up, folds an inner gate down from the center of the main gate as a step and work surface.
Two 6.6L V8s: Gas or Duramax?
Every 2026 Sierra 2500 HD runs one of two 6.6-liter V8s. The gas engine is standard on every trim except the Denali Ultimate; the Duramax turbo-diesel is optional on the rest and standard on the Denali Ultimate. Both drive a 10-speed automatic.
Standard, Pro through Denali
6.6L Gas V8 (L8T)
401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, direct injection, 10-speed automatic, and a 3.73 rear axle. It is rated to tow 16,000 pounds conventional on any Crew Cab and up to 18,700 pounds gooseneck on a Regular Cab 2WD long bed. It cannot be ordered with the Max Trailering Package.
Best for: a truck that stays within a county, tows a stock trailer a few times a month, and needs the lowest purchase price and the simplest upkeep.
Available Pro through Denali, standard Denali Ultimate
6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 (L5P)
470 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 975 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, a 10-speed automatic with the Allison name on its 2027 successor, and a 3.42 rear axle. The diesel brings an engine block heater, an exhaust brake, a 220-amp alternator, and B20 biodiesel capability with it, and it is the only engine that unlocks the Max Trailering Package.
Best for: gooseneck and fifth-wheel work, long grades on Highway 12 and 1806, and anyone who will ever need the 20,000-pound conventional or 22,390-pound gooseneck rating.
Two details buyers miss. First, the diesel's 3.42 axle and the gas engine's 3.73 axle are fixed; you do not pick a ratio. Second, Pro and SLE trucks with the Duramax and 4WD can be ordered with a 10-speed that has an integrated power take-off (MGU) for hydraulic upfits such as bale beds and hoists. Fuel economy is not published for heavy-duty trucks over 8,500 pounds GVWR, so we do not print a fuel-economy figure here.
Read the Duramax-versus-gas guide for ranch miles around Mobridge.
Seven Trims: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, Denali Ultimate
Pro and SLE are the only trims offered in Regular and Double Cab, and the Pro is the only trim available with 2WD. From the SLT up, every truck is a 4WD Crew Cab. The table shows what you get at each step; the Denali Ultimate is diesel-only and the AT4X is the only trim with its own suspension and 35-inch tires.
| Trim | Cabs and drive | Interior | Wheels and tires | Tailgate | Transfer case | Screens and audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Regular, Double, Crew; 2WD or 4WD | Jet Black vinyl or cloth, or Dark Walnut and Slate cloth; vinyl floor | 17-inch machined aluminum, all-season LT245/75R17E | Standard; EZ Lift with the Convenience Package | Two-speed push-button (4WD) | 7-inch screen, 3.5-inch driver display, 6 speakers |
| SLE | Regular, Double, Crew; 4WD only | Jet Black or Dark Walnut and Slate cloth; carpet | 17-inch machined aluminum; 18-inch with X31 | Standard; EZ Lift with the Value Package | Two-speed push-button | 13.4-inch Google built-in, 12.3-inch driver display, 6 speakers |
| SLT | Crew only; 4WD | Jet Black or Dark Walnut and Slate leather | 18-inch machined aluminum with dark pockets, all-terrain LT275/70R18E; 20-inch available | MultiPro with EZ Lift | Two-speed Autotrac | 13.4-inch, 12.3-inch, Bose 7-speaker |
| AT4 | Crew only; 4WD | Jet Black leather with Kalahari accents | 20-inch high-gloss black, all-terrain; BFGoodrich KO3 available | MultiPro | Two-speed Autotrac | 13.4-inch, 12.3-inch, Bose 7-speaker; 15-inch head-up display available |
| AT4X | Crew standard bed only; 4WD | Obsidian Rush full-grain leather, 16-way massage front seats | 18-inch machined aluminum with gloss black, 35-inch LT305/70R18 mud-terrain | MultiPro | Two-speed Autotrac plus driver-selectable rear e-locker | 13.4-inch, 12.3-inch, Bose 12-speaker, 15-inch head-up display standard |
| Denali | Crew only; 4WD | Forge perforated leather in Jet Black, or Atmosphere and Brownstone | 20-inch ultra-bright machined with chrome inserts; 22-inch available | MultiPro | Two-speed Autotrac | 13.4-inch, 12.3-inch, Bose 7-speaker; head-up display with the Reserve Package |
| Denali Ultimate | Crew only; 4WD; Duramax only | Alpine Umber full-grain leather, open-pore wood, 16-way massage front seats | 20-inch ultra-bright with gloss black inserts; 22-inch available | MultiPro | Two-speed Autotrac | 13.4-inch, 12.3-inch, Bose 12-speaker, 15-inch head-up display standard |
SLT Crew Cab long bed: the most-ordered gooseneck configuration in our area.
Denali Ultimate: Alpine Umber leather, open-pore wood, and the 15-inch head-up display.
AT4: Jet Black leather with Kalahari accents and all-weather floor liners.
Worth it if / skip it if. The SLT is worth it over the SLE for anyone who tows weekly: it adds leather, the MultiPro tailgate, Hitch View and the Trailering App, Digital Variable Steering Assist, and the Autotrac transfer case in one step. The AT4X is worth it for hunting, recreation, and the best suspension GM puts under a three-quarter-ton; skip it if a gooseneck is the job, because it cannot take the Max Trailering Package. The Denali Ultimate is worth it if you already wanted the Duramax and you drive 30,000 miles a year; skip it if you want the gas V8, because it is not offered.

Towing: Conventional vs Gooseneck and Fifth-Wheel, by Configuration
A Sierra 2500 HD carries two different maximums: one for a bumper-pull trailer on the receiver hitch, and a higher one for a gooseneck or fifth-wheel riding in the bed. Both depend on cab, bed, drive, engine, and whether the Max Trailering Package (NHT) is installed. Every figure below is "properly equipped," which means the trailering label on the truck is the final word.
Conventional (receiver hitch) ratings
| Configuration | 6.6L gas | Duramax | Duramax + Max Trailering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew Cab standard bed, 2WD or 4WD | 16,000 lb | 18,500 lb | 20,000 lb |
| Crew Cab long bed 4WD | 16,000 lb | 18,500 lb | 20,000 lb |
| AT4 Crew Cab standard bed | 16,000 lb | 18,500 lb | 20,000 lb |
| AT4X (AEV Edition) | 16,000 lb | 18,500 lb (18,400 lb) | Not available |
| Denali Crew Cab standard bed | 16,000 lb | 18,500 lb | 20,000 lb |
| Denali Ultimate Crew Cab standard bed | Not offered | 18,500 lb | 20,000 lb |
| Double Cab standard bed | 14,500 lb | 14,500 lb | Not available |
| Double Cab long bed, 2WD / 4WD | 16,000 lb | 17,900 / 17,600 lb | Not available |
| Regular Cab long bed | 14,500 lb | 14,500 lb | Not published (gooseneck rating applies) |
Gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings
| Configuration | 6.6L gas | Duramax | Duramax + Max Trailering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew Cab standard bed 2WD | 18,500 lb | 19,200 lb | 21,510 lb |
| Crew Cab standard bed 4WD | 18,380 lb | 19,100 lb | 21,600 lb |
| Crew Cab long bed 2WD | 18,500 lb | 19,200 lb | 21,870 lb |
| Crew Cab long bed 4WD | 18,280 lb | 19,000 lb | 21,500 lb |
| AT4 Crew Cab standard bed / long bed | 18,000 / 17,900 lb | 17,300 / 18,000 lb | 20,800 / 21,190 lb |
| AT4X (AEV Edition) | 18,000 lb (16,200 lb) | 17,300 lb (14,800 lb) | Not available |
| Denali Crew Cab standard bed / long bed | 18,000 / 17,900 lb | 17,600 / 18,400 lb | 19,900 / 19,820 lb |
| Denali Ultimate Crew Cab standard bed / long bed | Not offered | 17,200 / 17,900 lb | 19,300 / 19,190 lb |
| Regular Cab long bed 2WD | 18,700 lb | 18,400 lb | 22,390 lb (the maximum) |
| Regular Cab long bed 4WD | 18,300 lb | 18,200 lb | 22,000 lb |
Common mistake: shopping on the 22,390-pound number. It belongs to a Regular Cab 2WD long bed with the Duramax and Max Trailering, a truck almost nobody in Walworth County orders. The Crew Cab long bed 4WD Duramax most ranchers buy is rated 19,000 pounds gooseneck, or 21,500 pounds with the package. The AT4 and Denali give up a little more because of their wheels and equipment, and the AT4X and its AEV Edition give up the most. Higher figures you may see on third-party sites are either rounding errors or Sierra 3500 HD dually numbers and do not apply to this truck.

Max Trailering Package (NHT) and the Other Capability Packages
The Max Trailering Package is the single option that changes what a Sierra 2500 HD is rated to do. It borrows the 3500 HD's frame, rear leaf springs, shocks, and 12-inch rear axle, adds a spray-on bedliner and the gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep, and lifts the conventional rating to 20,000 pounds, the gooseneck rating to as much as 22,390 pounds, the GCWR to 30,000 pounds, and the GVWR to 11,900 pounds.
Prerequisites: the Duramax (it is not offered with the gas V8), 18-inch or larger wheels, and no bed delete. It is available on Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate, and not on the AT4X or any Double Cab.
| Package | What it includes | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Max Trailering (NHT) | 3500 HD frame, leaf springs, shocks, and 12-inch rear axle; spray-on bedliner; gooseneck and fifth-wheel prep | Duramax only; 18-inch or larger wheels; not on AT4X or Double Cab |
| Gooseneck and Fifth-Wheel Prep (Z6A) | Hitch platform with ball tray, stamped and capped bed holes, 7-pin connector in the bed | Any trim except bed delete; included with NHT |
| Snow Plow Prep and Camper (VYU) | 220-amp alternator, higher front axle rating, skid plates, dash pass-through grommet, roof emergency-light provisions | Requires 4WD; not with the F60 camper spring |
| X31 Off-Road (X31) and X31 Off-Road and Protection (RFX) | Hill Descent Control, skid plates, off-road suspension with twin-tube shocks; RFX adds spray-on bedliner, all-weather floor liners, and the X31 badge | X31 on SLE, AT4 (standard), Denali, Denali Ultimate; RFX on SLE and SLT |
| Heavy-Duty Front Spring / Camper (F60) | Heavier front springs for a slide-in camper or heavy front upfit | Not with VYU |
| Lowered GVWR (C7A) | Sets the GVWR to 10,000 pounds for licensing or insurance reasons | Not on AT4 or AT4X |
How to spot the package on a lot truck: the hitch ball tray and capped holes in the bed, the 7-pin connector in the bed wall, and the trailering label in the driver door jamb.
Payload, GVWR, and GCWR
Payload is what the truck itself can carry: passengers, cargo in the bed, and the tongue or pin weight of the trailer. On a gooseneck it is usually the number that runs out first.
| Configuration | Max payload, 6.6L gas | Max payload, Duramax |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab long bed | 4,049 lb | 3,811 lb |
| Crew Cab long bed 2WD | 3,863 lb | 3,654 lb |
| Crew Cab long bed 4WD | 3,812 lb | 3,566 lb |
| Crew Cab standard bed 2WD | 3,723 lb | 3,529 lb |
| Crew Cab standard bed 4WD | 3,707 lb | 3,463 lb |
| AT4 Crew Cab standard bed | 3,428 lb | 3,235 lb |
| AT4X (AEV Edition) | 3,304 lb (3,012 lb) | 3,111 lb (2,822 lb) |
| Denali Crew Cab standard bed | Not published separately | 3,096 lb |
GVWR runs from 10,000 pounds with the Lowered GVWR option to 11,900 pounds on a Crew Cab Duramax with Max Trailering. GCWR, the truck plus trailer limit, is 24,500 or 26,000 pounds with the gas V8 depending on wheels, and 26,000, 27,500, or 30,000 pounds with the Duramax, the top tier requiring the Max Trailering Package.
Pin-weight illustration (not an OEM figure): a Crew Cab long bed 4WD Duramax with Max Trailering is rated 21,500 pounds gooseneck and carries a 3,566-pound payload. A 16,000-pound loaded stock trailer is well inside the tow rating, but at a typical 20 to 25 percent gooseneck pin weight it puts 3,200 to 4,000 pounds on the truck, before the driver, a passenger, and a fuel tank in the bed. On paper the trailer fits; in practice the payload decides it. Weigh the loaded trailer at the elevator and check it against the label on the specific truck.
ProGrade Trailering, Cameras, and the Trailering App
Every 2026 Sierra 2500 HD ships with the Z82 trailering package: a receiver hitch, 7-pin and 4-pin connectors, an integrated trailer brake controller, Hitch Guidance with a dynamic alignment line on the rear camera, trailer sway control, and the trailering information label that lists the exact ratings for that truck.
- SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, Denali Ultimate: ProGrade Trailering is standard, which adds Hitch View (a zoomed, tilting view of the ball as you back under the coupler) and the In-Vehicle Trailering App with a pre-departure checklist, trailer light test, maintenance reminders, and trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring once the accessory sensors are fitted.
- SLE: the Preferred Package adds the Trailering App, Hitch View, and adaptive cruise control.
- Sierra HD Pro Safety Plus (SLE and SLT): Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and front and rear park assist; on Crew and Double Cab it also adds the Bed View camera, HD Surround Vision, and Trailer Camera Provisions for an accessory camera on the back of the trailer.
At the Indian Creek or West Whitlock ramp, Hitch View and the Bed View camera turn a two-person hookup into a one-person job. Read the Lake Oahe fifth-wheel and boat guide.
Built for a Dakota Winter
Calving checks at twenty below and a snow contract that starts at 4 a.m. are what a three-quarter-ton is for here. The 2026 Sierra 2500 HD covers it with equipment that is either standard or a single box on the order sheet:
- Engine block heater (K05) and a 220-amp alternator (KW5) come with every Duramax; the gas V8 runs a 170-amp alternator.
- Snow Plow Prep and Camper Package (VYU) adds the 220-amp alternator to gas trucks, raises the front axle rating for the blade, and adds skid plates, a dash grommet for the plow controller, and roof-light provisions. It requires 4WD.
- Autotrac two-speed transfer case on SLT and up gives an automatic 4WD mode that engages the front axle as the rear slips, for section roads that go from dry gravel to packed snow in the same mile. Pro and SLE use a two-speed push-button case.
- G80 automatic locking rear differential is standard on every trim except the AT4X, which uses a driver-selectable e-locker.
- StabiliTrak with trailer sway control and hill start assist are standard on every truck.

Cab, Bed, and Tailgate
| Cab and bed | Wheelbase | Overall length | Bed length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab long bed | 142 in | 236.3 in | 98.3 in (8 ft) |
| Double Cab standard bed | 149 in | 241.2 in | 82.3 in (6 ft 9 in) |
| Double Cab long bed | 162 in | 257.2 in | 98.3 in (8 ft) |
| Crew Cab standard bed | 159 in | 250.8 in | 82.2 in (6 ft 9 in) |
| Crew Cab long bed | 172 in | 266.8 in | 98.3 in (8 ft) |
Every configuration is 81.9 inches wide with a 21-inch-deep bed and 12 fixed tie-downs rated 500 pounds each. The bed is 51.9 inches between the wheel wells on the standard bed and 50.6 inches on the long bed, so a 4-by-8 sheet lies flat over the wells, not between them. The MultiPro tailgate is standard on SLT and up, with a dealer-installed Kicker audio system available for it, and Pro and SLE get a standard tailgate with EZ Lift available. Crew Cab trucks carry a 36-gallon fuel tank with either engine; Regular Cab diesels get 28 gallons and Double Cab standard-bed diesels 29 gallons.

How the Sierra 2500 HD Stacks Up
Our lot is Ford-heavy country, and many of our buyers walk in from an F-250 or a Ram 2500. We keep the competitor figures off this page on purpose: they change yearly, and a fair comparison has to match cab, bed, and package rather than headline against headline. The comparison guide does exactly that with figures pulled from the manufacturers' own towing guides and dated at publish.
The closer comparison is in our own lot. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD shares the Sierra's frame, both 6.6L V8s, the 10-speeds, and every trailer rating. What differs is the grille, the trim ladder, the interiors, and the MultiPro tailgate. Sit in both here on the same afternoon.

What is the difference between the conventional and the gooseneck or fifth-wheel tow rating?
The conventional rating applies to a bumper-pull trailer on the receiver hitch and tops out at 20,000 pounds with the Duramax and Max Trailering. The gooseneck and fifth-wheel rating applies to a trailer that couples in the bed over the rear axle, which lets the truck carry more, so it runs higher: 19,000 to 21,870 pounds on Crew Cabs depending on bed, drive, and package, and 22,390 pounds on a Regular Cab 2WD long bed. Both are printed on the trailering label in the driver door jamb of every truck.
Does the AT4X tow less than the AT4?
At the top end, yes. The AT4X cannot be ordered with the Max Trailering Package, so a Duramax AT4X is rated 18,500 pounds conventional and 17,300 pounds gooseneck, against 20,000 and 20,800 pounds for a Duramax AT4 with the package. The AT4X AEV Edition is rated 18,400 pounds conventional and 14,800 pounds gooseneck with the diesel.
What is the GCWR of a Sierra 2500 HD with the Duramax?
26,000 pounds standard, 27,500 pounds on a Crew Cab with 18-inch or larger wheels, and 30,000 pounds with the Max Trailering Package. The gas V8 is rated 24,500 or 26,000 pounds. GCWR is the combined weight of the loaded truck and the loaded trailer, so on a long trip with a full bed and a full tank it is worth checking alongside the tow rating.
Which Sierra 2500 HD configuration has the highest payload?
The Regular Cab long bed with the 6.6L gas V8, at 4,049 pounds. Among Crew Cabs, the long bed 2WD gas truck leads at 3,863 pounds and the long bed 4WD gas truck at 3,812 pounds. The Duramax weighs more, so it trades roughly 200 to 250 pounds of payload for its extra towing on the same configuration.
Does the 2026 Duramax use DEF, and how does it handle a South Dakota winter?
Yes, the Duramax uses diesel exhaust fluid and runs a diesel particulate filter that regenerates during normal driving. For winter it comes with an engine block heater, a 220-amp alternator, and dual batteries, and it is B20 biodiesel compatible. Plug in the block heater below zero, run winter-blend fuel from a local pump, and keep the DEF tank above a quarter. Our service department in Mobridge handles DEF, fuel filters, and regeneration questions.
What is the difference between the 3.42 and 3.73 rear axle?
They are tied to the engine, not chosen separately. The 3.42 axle comes with the Duramax, whose 975 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm does not need a deeper gear. The 3.73 axle comes with the gas V8 and multiplies its torque for pulling away with a load. In practice the diesel turns lower rpm at highway speed and the gas truck works a little harder on the Highway 12 grades, which is the whole engine decision in one sentence.
Can you get the Denali Ultimate with the gas engine?
No. The Denali Ultimate is Duramax only. The Denali is the highest trim that offers the 6.6L gas V8.
What is included in the SLE Value Package and the SLT Premium Package?
The SLE Value Package (PDU) bundles the SLE Convenience Package (dual-zone climate, 10-way power driver seat, tilt and telescoping column, LED fog lamps, roof marker lamps) with a spray-on bedliner, the SLE Heated Package, and remote start. The SLT Premium Package (PDB) bundles the SLT Convenience Package (bucket seats, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, Bose 7-speaker) and the SLT Preferred Package (heated rear seats, power sliding rear window, Universal Home Remote, adaptive cruise control) with Sierra HD Pro Safety Plus, 6-inch chrome steps, and a spray-on bedliner.
What new colors and wheels does the 2026 Sierra 2500 HD have?
Coastal Dune (G42) on Pro, SLE, AT4, and AT4X; Glacier White Tricoat (G4J) on SLT, Denali, and Denali Ultimate; a 20-inch bright-face aluminum wheel with dark pockets (Q7J) with the X31 Off-Road and Protection Package; and an 18-inch spare wheel (QNN). The other colors, engines, and ratings carry over from 2025.
Do I need a Sierra 3500 HD, or is the 2500 HD enough for my trailer?
Check the loaded trailer weight against the gooseneck rating of the exact 2500 HD configuration, then check the pin weight plus passengers and cargo against its payload. If either is over, or you are routinely within 10 percent of both, the 3500 HD is the right truck. If your loaded gooseneck is under about 19,000 pounds and the pin weight leaves room for the people and gear you carry, a Crew Cab Duramax 2500 HD with Max Trailering does the job with a better ride when it is empty.
